The Planets

The planets represent the needs or urges we all experience once we hop off the Evolutionary Express and take up residence inside a human body. For example, the Sun is your urge to shine and be creative, the Moon is your need to express emotions, Mercury is in charge of how you communicate and navigate, and Venus is all about who and what you love—and more importantly, how you love.

Classical planets: The seven classical planets are those easily seen with the naked eye, and were thus known to ancient astrologers. They are the Moon, Mercury, Venus, The Sun, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Sometimes, the Sun and Moon were referred to as “the lights” or the “luminaries”. Vesta and Uranus can also just be seen with the naked eye, though no ancient culture appears to have taken note of them. The order of the Classical planets is determined by the rate of speed. The Moon moves the fastest and so she is considered to form the first celestial sphere above earth. Everything below the moon is part of the sublunary sphere. Mercury moves the second fastest and so he rules the next highest sphere. Next is Venus, who takes about 260 days to revolve around the Sun. Following that is the Sun, then Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.

Modern planets: Since the invention of the telescope, Western astrology has incorporated Uranus, Neptune, Ceres, Pluto, and other bodies into its methodology. The Indian and Chinese astrologies have tended to retain the ancient seven-planet system. Meanings have had to be assigned to them by modern astrologers, usually according to the major events that occurred in the world at the time of their discovery. As these astrologers are usually Western, the social and historical events they describe have an inevitable Western emphasis. Astrologers consider the “extra-Saturnian” planets to be “impersonal” or generational planets, meaning their effects are felt more across whole generations of society.

The Sun (ruler of Leo)

Enthusiastic, inspiring, and exhilarating, Aries is a force of nature like no other. Sagittarius

Unlike other signs I can name (Sagittarius, say, or Pisces), you know how to apply self-discipline — and, unlike Virgo, you can do so without making a fetish of it. Your control is obvious in every cell of your body. You’re cool, reserved, dignified, and authoritative. As an earth sign, you see what needs to be done and you act expeditiously. And though you often have trouble loosening up, you have that earth-sign sensuality to indulge in. Aquarius

But whether you resonate to those particular areas isn’t the point. (After all, not all Sagittarians go horseback riding, and — surprise! — not every Cancer loves to cook.) You’re also innately spiritual.

Mercury (ruler of Gemini & Virgo)

Next time you pass by a flower shop, take a look at the FTD logo by the door. That fellow with the wings on his head and his feet is Mercury, the ancient Messenger of the Gods. He’s always been a very busy guy. Back in the day, his job was to shuttle messages back and forth between the gods and goddesses and we mere mortals—obviously, no easy feat. Nowadays, however, Mercury is even busier. With computers, cell phones, social media, and perhaps even the occasional human-to-human interaction to keep track of—well, he must be just exhausted. In a nutshell, he’s the astrological energy in charge of communication, navigation, and travel, so he’s still nicely represented by that winged image. He’s also the guy in charge of the five senses, so no matter what you’re aware of right now, be it taste, touch, sound, smell, or sight—well, that’s because Mercury is bringing it to you, live. At any rate, you’ll hear about him most when someone mentions that Mercury is retrograde, but even though these periods have come to be blamed for all sorts of problems, there’s really no cause for alarm. Mercury turns retrograde (or, basically, appears to move backwards from our perspective here on Earth) every three months for three weeks, giving us all a chance for a do-over—and who among us has never needed one of those?

Venus (ruler of Taurus & Libra)

So, if it’s Mercury that makes you aware of your environment, who allows you to experience all kinds of sensory sensations via the five senses? Who’s in charge of your preferences in each department? That delightful task falls under the jurisdiction of the lovely lady Venus, who describes the physical experiences that are the absolute best—in your book, anyway.
