From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cartomancy is fortune-telling or divination using a deck of cards. Forms of cartomancy appeared soon after playing cards were first introduced into Europe in the 14th century. Practitioners of cartomancy are generally known as cartomancers, card readers, or simply readers.
Cartomancy is one of the oldest of the more common forms of fortune-telling. It is similar to tarot card reading in that various card spreads are used, such as single card, “Destiny Square,” and 3 cards. The tarot can also be used in cartomancy.
Cartomancy using standard playing cards was the most popular form of providing fortune-telling card readings in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. In English-speaking countries, a standard deck of Anglo-American bridge/poker playing cards (i.e., 52-card, four-suit set) can be used in the cartomancy reading; the deck is often augmented with jokers, and even with the blank card found in many packaged decks. In France, the 32-card piquet playing-card deck was, and still is, most typically used in cartomancy readings, while the 52-card deck was, and still is, also used for this purpose. (A piquet deck is with a 52-card deck with all of the 2s through the 6s removed. This leaves all of the 7s through the 10s, the face cards, and the aces.)
Methods
The most popular method of cartomancy using a standard playing deck is referred to as the Wheel of Fortune. Here, the reader removes cards at random and assigns significance to them based in the order they were chosen. Though the interpretation of various cards varies by region, the common significators for the future are as follows:
Criticism
The interpretations of the meanings of different cards even within the same deck varies greatly among cartomancers. This raises doubt in the idea that there is some objective message coming directly from the cards, as might be necessary for amateur cartomancers to derive use from them. The lack of a shared understanding of card meanings hinders both verification of cartomancy’s effectiveness and communication between practitioners.
Cartomancy has also been criticized for not providing a proposed physical mechanism by which cards could be used to predict one’s future. Additionally, there have been no tests to date that show that cartomancy does any better than chance in either predicting the future or determining traits about individuals, despite large incentives to cartomancers who can show a successful test, such as the Randi challenge.
Playing Card Meanings for Divination:
Ace of Spades
Suit Influence:
Spades: Problems, challenges, delays, frustrations, loneliness, anger, secrets, mysteries, sickness, negative emotions, force, movement, karma, and the mind.
Number Influence:
The Number 1: New beginning, first, starting out, initiative, individuality, solitude, leader, the conscious mind and conscious control.
How to Read the Ace of Spades:
Traditionally the Ace of Spades has gotten a bad rap similar to the common misconceptions regarding the Death card of Tarot. And like the true meaning of the Tarot Death card, the Ace of Spades symbolizes the changes and transformations associated with endings and new beginnings.
In rare cases the Ace of Spades can indicate physical death, but only in combination with other Spades. Some systems use a reversed position meaning for the Ace of Spades even though no reverse meanings are used for the other 51 cards in the deck. Traditionally, the reversed Ace of Spades symbolizes death.
Whereas the three other Aces in the deck represents new beginnings, the Ace of Spades can refer to endings, or possibly the beginning of trouble in a reading. Of course, endings are not always bad things, so the appearance of the Ace of Spades in a reading can indicate a “rebirth,” and can be regarded as an indirectly positive influence. Because Spades symbolize “the mind,” a modern meaning of the Ace Spades refers to “what affects the mind” such as worry, fear, anxiety, decisions, etc.
The A♠ is the only card in the deck with a reversed meaning in my grandmother’s system. If the A♠ fell with the apex up, she would read it as “a troubled mind (or FEAR of death).” If it fell with the apex down, it indicated physical “death.”
In my own readings, I’ve dropped the reversed meaning, and read the A♠ as “worries, anxiety, a pending decision, etc.” Although in truth, I still wince a little when the reversed A♠ falls in a layout.
For the A♠ to indicate a physical death in my readings, it would have to be clustered with some of its more unsavory friends such as the 2♠ and the 5♠ or 6♠ along with either the 8♠ or 9♠ to indicate loss and grieving.
Two of Spades
Suit Influence:
Spades: Problems, challenges, delays, frustrations, loneliness, anger, secrets, mysteries, sickness, negative emotions, force, movement, karma, and the mind.
Number Influence:
The Number 2: duality, balance, compatibility, agreement, opposition, exchanges, partnerships and interactions.
How to Read the 2 of Spades:
Traditionally the 2 of Spades represents a restriction or “feeling stuck,” and a removal or separation necessary to move forward. All 2′s bring news, and with the 2 of Spades it’s usually bad news.
The number 2 symbolizes exchanges, and when influenced by the Suit of Spades, it denotes conflict, betrayal, violent arguments, misunderstandings, and malicious gossip.
The 2 of Spades can represent guilt, suppressed anger, feelings of resentment, and “holding a grudge.” It can denote vindictiveness, or harmful retaliation for any real or imagined slight.
My grandmother called this card “La Spaggadura,” which means “rift” or “break” in Italian dialect. The number 2 symbolizes agreements, compatibility and partnerships, but with the influence of the Suit of Spades, the 2♠ represents disagreements, incompatibility, and broken partnerships.
The 2♠ can indicate a break up, or losing touch with someone. It can denote leaving a job, getting rid of a car, or spending a large sum of money and feeling guilty about it. The separation can be of a temporary or permanent nature based on the circumstances and the surrounding cards.

Twos in multiples can mean double the fun or double the trouble. They can represent things coming in twos–couples, twins, socks, shoes, etc.
Two 2s: Things coming in pairs.
Three 2s: Can indicate lots of activity and everything happening at once.
Four 2s: Teamwork, co-operation, group activity.
Card Combinations:
Face Card + 2♠ = someone leaving the querent’s life.
3♠ + 2♠ = walking out on an argument, and holding a grudge.
4♥ + 2♠ = a marital separation or the dissolution of a partnership.
6♠ + 2♠ = an abandoned vehicle, or getting rid of a car.
Three of Spades
Suit Influence: Spades: Problems, challenges, delays, frustrations, loneliness, anger, secrets, mysteries, sickness, negative emotions, force, movement, karma, and the mind.
Number Influence:
The Number Three represents expansion, combinations, communications, creativity and growth.
How to Read the 3 of Spades:
Traditionally, he 3 of Spades is a card of “loss.” The number 3 symbolizes expansion and growth, and when influenced by the suit of spades, it can represent a growing problem, or a worsening situation. Conversely, this card can also signify interrupted growth, or a blockage.
The number 3 also represents communications, and the 3 of Spades can denote confusion, misunderstandings, lies, deceptions, and deceit. This card can represent an argument. Since the number 3 may also refer to a “third wheel,” and the 3 of Spades can indicate “third-party” interference, or trouble coming from the outside.
My grandmother called the 3♠ “La Suocera” which has two not so different meanings in Italian: “The Mother-in-Law” and “The Funny Bone.” She would say that both meanings apply to this card. Like the proverbial mother-in-law, the 3♠ can indicate a troublesome, meddling person who is interfering in someone else’s personal business. And like a sharp whack to the funny bone (or a meddlesome mother-in-law for that matter), the 3♠ can also indicate a particularly tender matter or situation-like a “sore point” in the querent’s life. This card can indicate that the querent or someone around the querent is “touchy” or defensive about someone or something. The 3♠ can also refer to “a third wheel,” and in matters of the heart it can represent the “mistress” or the “rake” in a love triangle.
You may remember an old song from the 1970′s by Cher called “Dark Lady.” If you don’t know it, the song is about a woman who goes to a gypsy fortune teller only to learn that she, her husband, and the gypsy woman are caught in a love triangle. When the gypsy lays down the cards, the lyrics to the song are:
“She dealt two cards, a queen and a three And mumbled some words That were so strange to me Then she turned up a two-eyed jack My eyes saw red but the card Still stayed black She said the man you love is secretly true To someone else who is very close to you”
I’ve always been sure that the three she dealt with the queen was the 3 of Spades. The two-eyed Jack was undoubtedly the Jack of Clubs since he’s the only black Jack with both eyes visible. In some of the older Cartomancy systems, the Jack of Clubs has a reputation for being insincere, and having a smooth line ladies.
Card Multiples:
All card multiples indicate surprises and unexpected events.
- Two 3s: a church or monastery, a growing interest in spirituality. An interest in the religious side of life.
- Three 3s: Awareness on a higher plane, a religious or mystical experience.

The Number 4: Stability, foundation, solidity, concrete, tangible, buildings, architecture, 4 walls, 4 tires, squaring off, being squared away, fair and square, square deal, etc.
How to Read the 4 of Spades:
Traditionally the 4 of Spades represents illness, recuperation, and the need for caution. From the stability and squareness of the number 4, the 4 of spades symbolizes the 4 legs and 4 posts of the sick bed. Symbolically the 4 of Spades can also represent a hospital room, a jail cell, or a coffin.
The 4♠ can represent a physical illness, and all the feelings and experiences associated with sickness such as rest, confinement, recuperation, exhaustion, taking it easy, moving at a slower pace, being bed-ridden, feeling cooped up or fenced in, staying home, etc.
The 4♠ can also represent anything that is in a poor state of health, or that is progressing too slowly. With diamonds, this card can indicate a unhealthy money situation, with hearts it can denote lovesickness, with clubs “business is slow,” etc.

The Number 5 symbolizes active energy, changes, restlessness, communication, the body, and the hands.
How to Read the 5 of Spades:
Traditionally the 5 of Spades is a card of anger and loss. From an older symbolic meaning of a hand holding a knife, the 5 of Spades can denote cutting someone or something out of one’s life. It can also denote a surgical procedure.
Specifically, the 5♠ can denote divorce, breaking old ties, or going it alone. It can indicate quitting one’s job, ending a marriage, or dropping out of school depending on the surrounding cards. The separation may be voluntary or not, but it is almost always accompanied by pain, grief, sorrow and tears.
The 5♠ and the 6♠ are similar in that they both denote a break of some sort. The difference is that with the 5♠ there are upset emotions, and tears regarding the break up. The 6♠ denotes a clean break with very little or no pain. For example, a woman who is distraught over her recent divorce will usually pull the 5♠, whereas a woman who is happy to be free would more likely pull the 6♠ to represent her divorce.
My grandmother called the 5♠ “Védova,” which means “widow” in Italian. This card represents the negative emotions associated with he loss of loved one, or the untimely end of a situation or relationship, such as anger, depression, loneliness, fears, tears, resentments and hurt feelings.
The 5♠ represents the left hand and left handedness.

Traditionally the 6 of Spades is a card of completion, and it represents the end of one phase and the beginning of a new one. The 6 of Spades can indicate endings of a permanent nature, especially when the situation or relationship has run its course, and there is nothing left to learn from the experience.
The 6♠ represents the need to let go. It can indicate getting rid of something that’s not working, and moving on to something new. It can indicate breaking up established patterns. It can denote the dissolution of a business, the breakup of a relationship or partnership, and a parting of ways.
The 6♠ also represents a moving force. It can denote moving forward with plans and projects, and making progress. It can denote a change of places such as moving residence or relocating a business. This card can denote “moving on” emotionally as well as physically. The 6♠ can also represent a mode of transportation such as a car, truck, bus or train.

Seven of Spades
Suit Influence:
Spades: Problems, challenges, delays, frustrations, loneliness, anger, secrets, mysteries, sickness, negative emotions, force, movement, karma, and the mind.
Number Influence:
The Number 7 is often considered a lucky or magical number. It represents spiritual attainment, positive changes, perfection, rest, surprises, chances, destiny, turning points, and healing. When negatively aspected, the Number 7 can denote mystery, illusions, delusions, deception and trouble.
How to Read the 7 of Spades:
Traditionally the 7 of Spades is a card of loss. The negativity of the Suit of Spades draws out the more negative aspects of the number 7 symbolism. Specifically, the 7 of Spades represents the emotional response to the loss of something prized or someone loved. It can indicate a serious setback in reaching an important goal. It can indicate the loss of a friend or loved one, or the reversal of cherished plans. The 7 of Spades represents the frustration we feel when a project or a relationship is not moving in the direction we had hoped.
The 7♠ is also the water and drinking card. In his book, It’s Written in the Cards, Dr. Martello says it can even represent water pipes, sinks and the bath. According to Dr. Martello, the 7♠ can also mean having a drink, and represents alcohol, a bar, a nightclub, or even a saloon!
In The Card Reader’s Handbook, Regina Russell adds drugs and addiction to the meanings of the 7♠, which makes sense. Although alcohol abuse may have been just as prevalent in Dr. Martello’s day, drug abuse is probably much more prevalent today.
My grandmother called the 7♠ Sfortuna which means “bad luck”, or “misfortune.” She read this card in the traditional way as loss, setbacks, frustration and unhappiness. But there was also the added idea of “the unexpected,” such as with an accident, mishap, or other nasty surprise. The misfortune of the 7♠ was usually something you never saw coming.

How to Read the 8 of Spades:
Traditionally the 8 of Spades is a card of disappointment, illness and restriction.
The number 8 symbolizes harmony and balance, but when influenced by the Suit of Spades, it denotes a loss of balance, and a lack of reciprocation. The 8 of Spades refers to any situation that is out of balance. It may indicate an imbalance in the body, which can manifest as an illness. It can denote unrequited or unreciprocated love, or a one-sided relationship that is not mutually beneficial.
Specifically, the 8 of Spades specifically can point to an imbalance in one’s physical or mental health, and may denote a visit to the doctor, dentist or psychiatrist. Whereas the 4♠ denotes an illness or injury, the 8♠ indicates the need for medical attention.
My grandmother called the 8♠ “La Spina,” which means “The Thorn” in Italian. This card can refer to a “thorn in one’s side,” or any problem or painful experience that wounds or causes pain. Specifically, 8♠ refers to a disappointment, an insult, a slight, a snub, hurt feelings, or an emotional upset.
The 8♠ can indicate a need for careful consideration. It can denote assessing one’s position, or reassessing one’s goals. It can refer to examining one’s accomplishments, or investigating something totally new. It can specifically refer to an examination such as a medical exam, civil service exam, scholastic exam, forensic exam, a police investigation, etc.
From an older cartomancy meaning of a prison, the 8♠ can indicate feeling trapped, restricted, undermined, or held back.

The 10 of Spades is traditionally a card of misfortune, grief, ruin, and. tragic endings. This card casts an ominous shadow across all surrounding cards in the spread.
Specifically the 10 of Spades represents the negative emotions associated with the unfortunate events in life–emotions such as fear, worry, sadness, tears, disappointment, depression and grief. The 10♠ can indicates that one’s worst fears are about to be realized. On a more positive note, the 10♠ can reveal the hang-ups and fears that block us from reaching our goals. The surrounding cards will offer clues on how to work thorough these blockages.
My grandmother called the 10♠ “l’ossessione“ (which means the obsession) because this card can denote compulsive behavior, or an obsession. The word “ossessione” can also mean nightmare in Italian, and the 10♠ can represent the darker side of life, and the realization of our worst nightmares. This is the area of secrets, mysteries, lies, suspicions, deception and betrayals. With cards of love the 10♠ can denote infidelities, or a jealous lover. With cards of money it can indicate theft, or gambling losses. With career cards the 10♠ denotes “shady deals,” lies and deceit. And with other spades it can indicate a tragic event.

The number 3 symbolizes growth and expansion, and when combined with the Suit of Diamonds, the 3 of Diamonds represents a small increase in money, financial growth, and taking the first steps on the ladder to success.
The 3 of Diamonds is a “small money” card. It can indicate increased income, or extra money coming in from an outside source such as a side job, moonlighting, or overtime hours.
The 3♦ can represent a small payment such as someone paying you back a small loan, or paying back a small debt. It can indicate making a small bank deposit or withdrawal. It can even indicate making a payment on a ”lay away” plan.
The 3♦ also represents building toward financial security. It can indicate expanding one’s business or clientele base, and an increase in profits.
I read the 3♦ as “a financial opportunity” which covers anything from a new job offer to a chance to get in on the ground floor of the next big “get rich quick’ pyramid scheme. It can indicate a lucrative side job, a small promotion on your current job, or even just a small raise in pay.
The 3♦ can also indicate “financial expansion.” This might include expanding a business base, or actually breaking down walls and expanding the business space.
The idea of expansion represented by the number 3, combined with the nervous energy of the Suit of Diamonds, can represent “scattered energy.” The 3♦ can denote a lack of focus, commitment, or effort. In relationship readings, this card can indicate “fickleness” or changeability in a lover who runs hot and cold.

From this union are also derived some very interesting interpretations such as a cash register, cash drawer, desk, banknote, check, bank account, check book, safety deposit box, lottery ticket, license, certificate, jewelry box, etc. In a more abstract sense, the 4 of Diamonds might indicate a solid financial deal, or just working toward financial stability.
Also from the combination of financial interests with 4 walls symbolism, the 4♦ can represent rent or a rented piece of property such as an apartment or summer home.
The 4♦ represents a stable financial situation. For example, if it falls with the 3♣, the business opportunity will be financially stable. Specifically, the 4♦ can indicate financial papers. This can be anything from a dollar bill to a real estate license. It can represent a ticket that is purchased or paid for, including traffic ticket, movie ticket, lottery ticket, etc.

“This is never a card of death, but indicates an individual who is ‘upside down,’ who is suspended between the realities of life and visions and ambitions which he has not been able to clarify. He is inverted, in a condition contrary to that in which most people are found. The Jack of Clubs is a busy, active young person. He is clever and enterprising. He enjoys sports, and may participate in school or community baseball, football, etc. This is also the card of “the student,” and can represent a school boy, or a young man in high school or college.
My grandmother called the J♣ “Domestico” which means “man servant” in Italian. This card did not necessarily refer to a servant or butler (although it could), but to a young man who is of service to-or in the service of the person being read. He may represent someone who uses flattery to persuade, or just to make others feel good.
The J♣ can represent an employee, and often denotes a young acquaintance from work. Or he could be a close friend or business associate who is going to be useful to the inquirer in some way. The J♣ may wear a uniform, such as a school uniform, or the uniform could symbolize his work. Card Combinations & Multiples:

She can represent a socially active woman who enjoys clubs, societies, and other social functions. She runs her home efficiently, and she likes to keep busy. She is a hard worker, and prefers to be an active participant in life.
My Grandmother called the Queen of Clubs “The Successful Woman of Business.” When I first learned to read, I had a difficult time with the Face Cards. I found it hard to try to place the people into the seeker’s life. I would stumble over trying to describe the person’s complexion and coloring. It helped me to think of the Face Cards as stereotypes or cardboard cutout figures, and then to allow the surrounding cards to flesh out the description. Now I almost never read the Face Cards as coloring unless I’m using a significator, or the seeker specifically asks for a physical description.
I usually read the Queen of Clubs as a female work associate. If she represents a love interest about to enter a male seeker’s life, she is someone he will meet at work or in a work environment. When I read for a female, the Queen of Clubs most often represents the seeker’s best friend. Of course the Queen of Clubs can represent the female seeker herself. For example, when asking about a potential love interest, if the 8♥ turned up in the reading, it would signify that this person is already involved in an existing relationship. The surrounding cards would indicate if the existing relationship was happy or not.
It’s important to note that the 8♥ doesn’t necessarily indicate a romantic relationship. The existing relationship might be a controlling parent or friend. My grandmother called the 9 of Hearts The Big Wish Card. There is another wish card in the deck-the 3 of Hearts-which she called “Small Wishes.” If the Small Wish Card appears in the card spread, it indicates that a small wish that the seeker does not expect will come true. The Big Wish Card-the 9♥-represents the deepest wish or desire on the seeker’s mind, and indicates that the wish will come true even if surrounded by spades. The Spades would indicate problems and challenges regarding the wish, and would delay but not nullify the good fortune of the 9♥.
For example, if a woman wishes for the love of a specific man, the 9♥ may appear surrounded by spades to indicate that her destiny is not to be with this particular person. What she is really wishing for is the love and companionship of a happy relationship, and the card would denote that she will eventually receive this wish.
